Most of us consciously long to be deeply seen, heard, and supported. Yet, if our nervous system experienced early misattunement, childhood instability, or later abuse and relational trauma, the body learns a painful survival rule: exposure equals peril.

When someone offers us true presence, care, or open-hearted reception, an un-attuned nervous system doesn’t feel safety—it feels an audit, a threat, or an impending trap. Defense mechanisms instantly fire up to protect us from being erased or overwhelmed.

Join me for a powerful, deep-dive 4-session special VortexHealing® series designed to untangle these survival patterns at the root, shift out of defensive armor, and rebuild your somatic capacity to safely be received.

A nervous system map for being “received” describes the ventral vagal state of safety and connection. In this state, your body realizes it is welcomed, heard, and held safely by another person or environment, acting as the biological home of co-regulation where defenses drop and relaxation begins.

Description

The nervous system becomes un-attuned early in life or through relational trauma when our primary caregivers or environments fail to accurately mirror, validate, or safely hold our emotional and physical states. Instead of meeting an open, co-regulating system, the developing nervous system encounters misattunement, unpredictability, or emotional absence.

The nervous system can become un-attuned early in life through childhood misattunement, or it can be fractured later by abuse, relational trauma, and unsafe environments in adulthood. When primary caregivers, partners, or life circumstances repeatedly fail to validate, mirror, or safely hold our vulnerability, the body learns that exposure equals peril.

Instead of meeting an open, co-regulating system, the nervous system adapts for survival by locking into protective states:

  • Sympathetic (Mobilization / Fight or Flight): The middle of the system. Activated when you feel unseen, misunderstood, or threatened, leading to anxiety, frustration, or a rush to fix things.

  • Dorsal Vagal (Immobilization / Shutdown): The bottom of the system. Activated when connection fails completely, leading to numbness, collapse, or feeling invisible.
